Hamster Food

I'm not going to bore you with lots of statistical facts on proper nutrition for your hamster. However I will give you some popular recommendations that will give you an idea of some regular foods and yummy treats for your hamster to enjoy!

I've heard from many different sources that the Kaytee mix for hamsters is a nice start for beginning hamster owners. We used this for all of our hamsters and they loved the variety inside. Don't be surprised however if they you find that they do not like a particular piece of food inside, but they will eat almost everything you give them from this bag. Make sure you get hamster food specifically, because their bags look very similar for different types of food. You can find a picture below:

Generally speaking any mixed bag of hamster foods work well, just make sure they don't any additional sugar other than what is naturally in the foods already. Too much sugar can be unhealty for hamsters.

Remember that hamsters are just like people. They love eating, and having a large variety to choose from. They also need fresh food daily, so it is good to change their food and water every day. About a tablespoon of food per day is good, although it will vary so you may want to give them a bit more. Hamsters naturally know what to eat in order to stay healthy, so as long as you give them a good variety of foods to choose from, they will eat what they need/want.

It's also great to throw in extra treats that can give your hamster extra nutrients and keep them happy.Be sure to check see our videos of Sandwich eating fettucini noodles! Here are some other treats you can feed your pet, but only give them what they can eat in one sitting, and limit it to a 1-2 times a week. You do not want to give them so much food that they can't finish it because it may mold inside the cage. If you notice any signs of diarrhoea you should stop feeding them any fruits and vegetables until they are fine again.

To Bowl or Not to Bowl?

I've read about a small debate about whether or not you should provide food to your hamster in a food dish or not. Some say that since hamsters can forage for food already, you can just put it in their cage anyway. Plus they will tend to hide it and it will be all over the floor or hidden somewhere anyway.

The other side is that having a food dish helps keep the cage cleaner. Plus being able to easily glance into the food dish is helpful because you can quickly see how much they've been eating and which foods they leave.

Look, we both fit!
It is also easier for you to discard any old foods and replace it with fresh stuff. As a side note, if you have more than one hamster in a cage, be sure that the bowl is large enough for all of them to get food at once, or there may be scuffles for food. A good general rule is that there is at least enough space for each of their bodies to fit into the bowl because they like to sit in the bowl whlie they look around.
